Erianthus (er-i-an-thus), hardy pampas grass, silver plume grass, Poaceae Family. One of the loveliest ornamental grasses, Erianthus is a terrific screen with its long, showy, silvery white silky plumes and striking autumn coloring. With Erianthus’ foliage clumping habit, it is a dazzling addition to the garden, either as a specimen or in a group for the larger garden.
Erianthus will perform best in average, somewhat dry, well-drained soil, in full sun. If planted in rich, moist, fertile soil, Erianthus usually need staking or may stunt growth. Cut foliage to the ground in late winter before new shoots appear. Use this hardy grass where it is too cold for true Pampas Grass.
