Sedum 'Matrona'
Common name: Stonecrop; a/k/a Hylotelephium telephium 'Matrona'
Zones 3 to 9.
Full sun.
Plants reach 18 to 24 inches tall and 10 to 15 inches wide; upright, vase-shaped clump.
Growth rate: Moderate, easy to grow.
Gray-green leaves with bronze-tinged edges are attached to sturdy, dark burgundy stems. Masses of tiny, star-like, flowers bloom in long-lasting clusters of pastel pink become chocolate-brown in winter. Stout, sturdy, shiny, purplish-red stems support the massive flower heads from late summer through fall. If left standing, stems and flower heads provide winter interest and food for birds.
A hybrid of 'Atropurpureum' and 'Autumn Joy', leaves often thicker than Autumn Joy. Matrona is German for 'lady of well-rounded form' referring to its habit.
