Praised for their cheerful brightly colored flowers, coneflowers are a mainstay in today's garden. Be sure to leave some spent blooms on the plants in the fall because their seeds provide winter food for finches and other birds. Dried seed heads also provide winter interest.
Echinacea 'Cheyenne Spirit' is a vibrant and exciting coneflower cultivar that is known for its amazing array of flower colors. It is a single-species Echinacea, meaning it is not a hybrid, and it is prized for its ability to produce a wide range of colors from a single seed packet. Here is a closer look at what makes it special:
Appearance:
- Flowers: 'Cheyenne Spirit' is like a coneflower surprise! It produces a mix of flower colors, including shades of red, orange, purple, yellow, cream, and even gold. Each plant will typically have a single color, but when you plant a group of them, you will get a beautiful rainbow effect. The flowers have a classic coneflower shape with horizontal petals surrounding a central cone. They are typically 3-4 inches in diameter and bloom profusely from early summer to fall.
- Foliage: The plant has sturdy, upright stems that hold the flowers well above the foliage. The leaves are lance-shaped and dark green, forming a neat and compact clump.
Growing Conditions:
- Light: Thrives in full sun, needing at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for optimal flowering. It can tolerate some light shade, but flowering may be reduced.
- Soil: Prefers well-drained soil and is quite drought tolerant once established. It is adaptable to various soil types but performs best in moderately fertile soil.
- Hardiness Zones: Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, making it suitable for a wide range of climates.
Uses:
- Borders and Beds: Its vibrant mix of flower colors makes it a perfect addition to borders, beds, and cottage gardens.
- Containers: 'Cheyenne Spirit' also works well in containers, adding a pop of color to patios and decks.
- Cut Flowers: The flowers make excellent cut flowers for fresh or dried arrangements.
- Pollinator Gardens: It is a great choice for pollinator gardens, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators with its abundant nectar and pollen.
- Mass Plantings: Planting it in masses can create a stunning visual effect, resembling a colorful meadow.
Additional Benefits:
- Long Blooming Season: 'Cheyenne Spirit' blooms for an extended period, providing continuous color throughout the summer and into fall.
- First-Year Flowering: It is known for blooming in its first year, so you do not have to wait to enjoy the flowers.
- No Deadheading Required: It does not require deadheading to continue blooming, making it a low-maintenance choice.
- Drought Tolerant: Once established, it is quite drought tolerant, making it a good choice for water-wise gardens.
Overall, Echinacea 'Cheyenne Spirit' is a fantastic choice for gardeners looking for a long-blooming, low-maintenance perennial with a vibrant mix of flower colors that attract pollinators. Its adaptability and first-year flowering make it a versatile and rewarding addition to any garden.

Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.

Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
