Helleborus WEDDING PARTY Series - Mixed (20)ct Flat
Lenten Rose
The double-flowered Helleborus WEDDING PARTY™ series debuted in the 2014-2015 season, an effort of years of work from hybridizer Hans Hansen. A mixture of color strains custom blended at the plug level for a more evenly distributed mix. Colors in the mix include black, mauve purple, white, yellow, and pink.
Hellebores are the harbingers of spring, blooming for six weeks or more beginning in late winter. They are often flowering during the Christian season of Lent, from which they get their common name, Lenten Rose. This is the perfect plant for naturalizing in moist, woodland areas where its extensive root system will spread as far as it is allowed. D.eer and Rabbit resistant.
Hellebores are enjoyable to grow because they are low-maintenance and disease/pest-free. Simply trim back last year's foliage in the spring. They can adapt to almost any growing conditions. Though they prefer rich, moist, organic soil, they will also grow in sandy or clay soil. They can even tolerate short periods of drought. The soil pH can range anywhere from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline.
Hellebores are shade plants that need to be protected from the hot afternoon sun. They will grow in full shade under large deciduous trees as long as they receive full sun from winter to spring before the trees get their leaves.
To increase the number of hellebores in your garden, mulch them heavily in the fall. The new seedlings will grow in this mulch come spring and can then be transplanted elsewhere in the garden.
WARNING: Hellebores are poisonous. Do not consume any part of the plant!

Blooms Early Spring - Mid-spring
Hellebores, also known as Lenten roses, are a diverse group of herbaceous or evergreen perennial flowering plants. They belong to the family Ranunculaceae, and are known for their early blooms, often appearing while winter's chill still lingers. The Helleborus WEDDING PARTY® series, developed by hybridizer Hans Hansen, was introduced in 2015, and quickly gained recognition as the Perennial Plant Association's Plant of the Year in 2005. These charming plants are native to Europe and western Asia, bringing a touch of old-world elegance to gardens.
The WEDDING PARTY® series stands out for its abundant double blossoms, which emerge in a captivating array of colors. Imagine a mix of dark pinks, apricots, whites, and creams, with the occasional surprise of a slate or even a near-black bloom. This series was specifically bred for a balanced mix of colors, ensuring a vibrant display in your garden. Even after the blooming season, the dark green, leathery foliage remains attractive throughout the year, providing continued interest.

Care Requirements One of the most appealing aspects of Helleborus is their low-maintenance nature. They are relatively carefree and thrive in a variety of conditions. Here is a guide to their basic care:
- Pruning: Simply trim back the old foliage in early spring to make way for new growth.
- Soil: While they prefer rich, moist, organic soil, they are adaptable and can tolerate sandy or clay soil as well. Aim for a neutral to alkaline soil pH.
- Watering: Provide consistent moisture, especially during the establishment phase. Once established, they are quite drought tolerant.
- Sunlight: Hellebores are shade-loving plants, so protect them from the harsh afternoon sun. They thrive in dappled shade or full shade, especially in warmer climates.
- Spacing: When planting, space them about 18 to 24 inches apart. This allows ample room for their mature spread and ensures good air circulation.
- Mulching: Mulch heavily in the fall to encourage new seedlings. These seedlings can be transplanted elsewhere in the garden come spring.
- Cutting for Bouquets: To use Helleborus in bouquets, cut the stems of older blooms that have already shed their pollen and begun to form seed pods.
Toxicity Important Note: All parts of the Helleborus plant are toxic to both humans and animals. Avoid ingesting any part of the plant, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. While severe reactions are rare, it is always best to err on the side of caution.
Ideal Growing Conditions Hellebores thrive in woodland settings, where they receive dappled shade and moist, well-drained soil. They are adaptable to a range of soil types, but perform best in soil enriched with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted leaf mold. This helps to improve drainage and provide essential nutrients.
Interestingly, Hellebores exhibit some flexibility in their bloom time depending on the climate. In milder regions, they may start flowering as early as winter, while in colder areas, they typically bloom in late winter or early spring. This adaptability makes them a welcome addition to gardens across a wide range of hardiness zones.
The Helleborus WEDDING PARTY® Series - Mixed is a fantastic choice for gardeners seeking low-maintenance plants that provide early spring color. These evergreen perennials offer a stunning display of double blossoms in a variety of shades, adding a touch of elegance to any garden. They are adaptable to various soil types and light conditions, and once established, they are quite drought tolerant. Remember to plant them in a shady spot with well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
While Helleborus plants are poisonous, their beauty and ease of care make them a worthwhile addition to any garden. Just be sure to keep them away from children and pets. If you are looking for a plant that will brighten your garden as winter fades, the Helleborus WEDDING PARTY® Series - Mixed is an excellent choice. Bring these charming plants into your garden and enjoy their vibrant blooms year after year!
Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!

Beautiful and healthy!
The helleborus plants arrived on time and in excellent condition (unlike some other nurseries). They all had extensive roots and were very easy to plant. Four days in the ground - they are looking great. Highly recommended.
