The Hemerocallis 'Tiger Swirl' daylily is a remarkable cultivar with unique characteristics that distinguish it from other daylilies. It is often called the "perfect perennial" because of its showy flowers, drought tolerance, heat stress immunity, ability to grow in most hardiness zones, and low care requirements. This daylily boasts large, fragrant, pale golden-yellow flowers with a raspberry-red eye. The bottom sepals are smooth and often twist or curl, giving it a swirling motion. This daylily blooms in midsummer and is dormant (deciduous).
The 'Tiger Swirl' daylily has huge, 6.5-inch triangular-shaped flowers with a pronounced raspberry-red eye. The light golden-yellow petals and raspberry-red eye create a striking contrast, and the unique shape of the petals, which twist backward, further enhances their visual appeal. This gives the flower a distinctive "spider-like look". Each flower typically lasts no more than 24 hours, hence the common name 'Daylily'. However, with well-branched, 3-way scapes and nearly 12 buds per scape, the blooming period extends throughout midsummer. It grows up to 32 inches tall and spreads via rhizomes to 18-24 inches. It is non-native to North America.
This daylily is a tetraploid, meaning it has 44 chromosomes, twice as many as diploids. Tetraploids tend to be bigger, stronger plants. It is also considered a premium daylily due to its exceptional bloom performance, vibrant flower color, winter hardiness, and vigorous habit. Walters Gardens, a renowned perennial plant provider, considers 'Tiger Swirl' to be one of the top 20 daylilies they offer.
Hemerocallis 'Tiger Swirl' is a result of the cross between (sdlg x King George) x (sdlg x King George). It has one known child plant, although the specific name is not available.
Growing Conditions and Hardiness The 'Tiger Swirl' daylily is adaptable and can survive many harsh conditions that other plants cannot tolerate, including polluted city environments, slopes, poor and dry soils, and under black walnut trees. It is also salt-tolerant and can handle moderate urban pollution. It prefers full sun for optimal flowering performance. For those living in fire-prone areas, it is worth noting that this daylily has low flammability.
Care Requirements Daylilies are known for their low-maintenance nature, and 'Tiger Swirl' is no exception. It thrives in average, moist, but well-drained soils. While it performs well in various soils, fertile loam is preferred. It tolerates heat and summer humidity, but thorough watering is required to maintain attractive foliage.
- Planting The best time to plant daylilies is in early fall or early spring.
- Watering Water thoroughly, especially during prolonged periods of drought.
- Fertilizing Fertilization is not typically required, but a light application of an all-purpose garden fertilizer can be applied in spring.
- Pruning After flowering, remove spent blooms and seedpods to improve the appearance and encourage rebloom. When all the flowers on a scape are finished, cut off the scape close to ground level. Remove dead foliage in the fall. Deadheading the plant, however, will not extend the bloom time.
- Pests and Diseases No serious pest or disease issues are associated with this daylily. However, keep an eye out for mites, aphids, thrips, or daylily rust.
The Hemerocallis 'Tiger Swirl' daylily is a beautiful and low-maintenance addition to any garden. Its unique flower shape, vibrant colors, and long blooming period make it a standout performer. With its adaptability and hardiness, it is an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. This daylily thrives in a variety of settings, from urban gardens to naturalized landscapes, and its versatility makes it suitable for different gardening styles, including borders, containers, and mass plantings. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or just starting out, the 'Tiger Swirl' daylily is sure to bring beauty and enjoyment to your outdoor space.
Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.

Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
