Creeping Phlox is a low-growing species which forms a carpet-like mat no taller than 6 inches. This popular little perennial is best utilized in rocky areas, on slopes, and in flower borders.
Creeping phlox is a versatile, easy to grow groundcover for full sun. Gritty, neutral soils are preferred, and good drainage is essential. It's a good idea to shear this plant back and clean up any dead foliage in early summer, just after it's finished blooming. This will produce denser foliage and will encourage it to rebloom. Divisions can be made every few years in summer.
Phlox subulata 'Purple Beauty' is a captivating groundcover that blankets your garden with vibrant purple blooms in spring. It is a popular choice for adding a splash of color and texture to sunny areas. Here is a closer look at its features:
Appearance and Characteristics:
- Intense Purple Flowers: 'Purple Beauty' is renowned for its abundant, star-shaped flowers in a rich, vibrant purple hue. These blooms practically cover the entire plant in spring, creating a stunning carpet of color.
- Low-Growing and Spreading: Like other creeping phlox varieties, 'Purple Beauty' is a low-growing perennial that typically reaches only 4-6 inches in height. It spreads by creeping stems, forming a dense mat of foliage over time.
- Evergreen Foliage: The foliage is evergreen, providing year-round interest even when the plant is not in bloom. The leaves are small, needle-like, and dark green, creating a nice contrast to the colorful flowers.
Growing Conditions:
- Sunlight: 'Purple Beauty' thrives in full sun, which encourages the most abundant flowering. However, it can tolerate some light shade.
- Well-Drained Soil: It prefers well-drained soil, as soggy soil can lead to root rot. It can tolerate a variety of soil types, including sandy and rocky soils.
- Hardiness Zones: It is typically hardy in USDA zones 3-9, making it a versatile choice for many gardens.
Uses in Landscaping:
- Groundcover: 'Purple Beauty' is an excellent choice for a low-maintenance groundcover, especially in sunny areas.
- Rock Gardens: Its love for well-drained soil and its cascading growth habit make it a perfect addition to rock gardens.
- Edging: It can be used to create a colorful border along pathways or flower beds.
- Slopes: It is effective for stabilizing slopes and preventing erosion.
Benefits:
- Eye-catching Flowers: The vibrant purple flowers add a touch of drama and brighten up the garden in spring.
- Evergreen Foliage: Provides year-round interest.
- Low Maintenance: Once established, it requires minimal care.
- Attracts Pollinators: The flowers attract butterflies and other pollinators to the garden.
- Deer Resistant: Deer tend to avoid eating phlox.
Potential Drawbacks:
- Can be Invasive: In ideal conditions, it can spread aggressively, so it may need to be contained.
- Needs Good Drainage: It is susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soil.
Additional Tips:
- Planting: The best time to plant 'Purple Beauty' is in the spring or fall.
- Spacing: Space plants about 12-18 inches apart to allow for spreading.
- Maintenance: Shear the plants back lightly after flowering to encourage new growth and prevent them from becoming leggy.
Overall, Phlox subulata 'Purple Beauty' is a delightful and easy-to-grow groundcover that adds a burst of vibrant color to the spring garden. Its striking flowers, evergreen foliage, and low-maintenance requirements make it a popular choice for gardeners.
Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!

Top phlox
Despite COVID-19 delaying delivery time, my order of 25 individual creeping phlox plants arrived in good time, and in good shape. Every plant was a healthy green, some with buds just opening, and they were packed extremely well, with newspaper keeping them in place inside the waxed cardboard box. I would definitely purchase garden material from Bloomin Designs again.
