Achillea 'Little Moonshine' is a charming, compact version of the popular 'Moonshine' yarrow, offering the same beautiful yellow flowers and silvery foliage in a smaller package. Here's what you need to know about this delightful perennial:
Compact Beauty:
- Dwarf Size: 'Little Moonshine' is significantly smaller than its parent, typically growing only about 12-14 inches tall and 14-16 inches wide. This makes it perfect for smaller gardens, rock gardens, or containers where space is limited.
- Abundant Yellow Blooms: Despite its smaller size, 'Little Moonshine' doesn't skimp on blooms. It produces masses of cheerful, canary yellow flowers in flat-topped clusters throughout the summer.
- Silvery-Gray Foliage: Like 'Moonshine,' it features finely-divided, fern-like foliage that is a beautiful silvery-gray color. This foliage provides a lovely contrast to the bright yellow flowers and adds a touch of elegance to the garden.
Growing Conditions:
- Full Sun: 'Little Moonshine' thrives in full sun, needing at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day for optimal flowering.
- Well-Drained Soil: It prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate a variety of soil types, including sandy or rocky soils.
- Drought Tolerant: Once established, it's quite drought-tolerant, making it a good choice for water-wise gardens or areas with low rainfall.
Care and Maintenance:
- Low Maintenance: 'Little Moonshine' is a very low-maintenance plant.
- Watering: Water regularly during the first year to help it establish its roots. After that, it can tolerate dry periods.
- Deadheading: Removing spent flower heads can encourage more blooms and maintain a tidy appearance.
- Dividing: You can divide clumps every few years to maintain vigor and prevent overcrowding.
Uses in the Garden:
- Small Gardens and Borders: Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller gardens or the front of borders where it won't overpower other plants.
- Rock Gardens: It's well-suited for rock gardens, where it can tolerate dry conditions and add a pop of color.
- Containers: It thrives in containers, making it a versatile choice for patios, balconies, or decks.
- Meadow Gardens: It can be incorporated into meadow gardens to add a touch of yellow and attract pollinators.
- Cut Flowers: The flowers are long-lasting and make excellent cut flowers for fresh or dried arrangements.
Benefits:
- Attracts Pollinators: The flowers are highly attractive to butterflies and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to pollinator gardens.
- Deer and Rabbit Resistant: Deer and rabbits tend to avoid yarrow, so it's a good choice for gardens where these animals are a problem.
- Drought Tolerant: Its ability to withstand dry conditions makes it a valuable plant for water-wise gardens.
- Long Blooming Period: 'Little Moonshine' provides a long-lasting show of color in the garden, blooming from early summer to early fall.
If you're looking for a compact, low-maintenance, and pollinator-friendly plant with cheerful yellow flowers, Achillea 'Little Moonshine' is an excellent choice! It's a versatile and adaptable perennial that will brighten any sunny spot in your garden.

Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
