Black Scallop Ajuga has glossy, deep purple/near black, crisp foliage. Black Scallop spreads by stolons with a somewhat slower growth habit than other reptans. Deep lilac-blue, 2"-3" tall flower spikes shoot up putting on a brilliant show in Spring. Plants can be mowed on high to remove spent flowers. Ajuga thrives in humusy soil and will grow fine in average, well drained soil. Will tolerate occasional dry soil but prefers regular watering. Plant in areas with good air circulation in hot, humid climates to prevent crown rot. Good for large areas as ground cover, on slopes and edges of pathways as well as rock gardens and beds. Mature height 3"-4", spread 18"-24".
Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop' is a beautiful and easy-to-grow groundcover plant. It is tolerant of a variety of conditions, including full sun to partial shade and moist to dry soil. 'Black Scallop' can be planted in spring or fall. Choose a location that receives full sun to partial shade. The ideal soil should be moist but well-drained. Water regularly during the first few weeks after planting, but then allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
'Black Scallop' does not require much fertilizer. Fertilize once a year in spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer.' Black Scallop' does not require much pruning. You can remove any dead or damaged leaves as needed. 'Black Scallop' is hardy in USDA zones 4-9. In colder climates, the plant may need to be protected from frost with a layer of mulch.
Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop' can be propagated by division. To divide the plant, carefully dig it up and separate the rhizomes. Replant the rhizomes in separate containers or in the ground.

Black Scallop Ajuga
Plants arrived.in a plastic flat and wrapped in moist newspaper. I was able to get them planted before nightfall and they are all looking great. I’m hoping they will get even better come Spring.
