Their showy spring blooms add colorful flair followed by decorative seed pods which add interest to the fall garden. Baptisia is an ancient perennial that was first used by Native Americans to make indigo dyes. It can be found growing naturally in meadows, tolerating heat and drought with ease and resisting deer browsing too. Be sure to choose a permanent location when planting Baptisia since mature plants resent being disturbed.
