Blue Sedge has a clumping habit but creeps slowly by rhizomes. Flowers green and insignificant late Spring. Carex flacca will grow in average soil. Prefers medium to wet soil but will tolerate drying out with regular watering. Can be used for ground cover in mass plantings, naturalizing, erosion control, edging and borders. Mature Height 8"-10", spread 12"-18"
Carex flacca is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant groundcover that is native to Europe and Asia. It is a good choice for shady areas and can be used as a lawn substitute or as an accent plant.
Choose a location that receives partial to full shade. Blue sedge can tolerate full sun, but it will do best in shady areas. Plant in well-drained soil. Blue sedge is tolerant of dry soil, but it will not do well in wet or soggy soil.
Space the plants 10-12 inches apart. Blue sedge will spread over time, so it is important to space the plants appropriately. Water regularly during the first year after planting. Once the plants are established, they are drought-tolerant and only need to be watered during dry periods.
Fertilize in spring with a balanced fertilizer. Blue sedge does not require a lot of fertilizer, but a light application in spring will help to promote new growth. Cut back the plants in late winter. This will help to keep them tidy and encourage new growth. With proper care, Carex flacca will thrive in your garden for many years to come.
Blue sedge is a host plant for the comma butterfly, if interested in attracting butterflies to your garden. Carex flacca is deer-resistant.
This sedge is also tolerant of salt, so it can be used in coastal gardens.
Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!

Carex Flacca
I bought two orders of Flacca this spring because I like it so much. I am pairing it with carex everillo and other ornamental grasses. The color is beautiful.

Excellent Plants, Excellent Value
I don’t usually write reviews and I was skeptical of ordering plants via mail but I decided that this purchase deserved a great review. First off, the Carex flacca I ordered was packed and shipped excellently. With all the Covid-19 shipping issues I was even more impressed that my plants arrived in great condition after being missed for delivery by FedEx for 4 days in a row. Plants were not only alive and well but they were very filled out in their pots and I was able to divide a number of the pots to cover more planting area. I cannot emphasize enough how pleased I am with this purchase and will definitely look to order from Blooming Designs again. Forgot to add that pricing and shipping costs were extremely competitive and fair.
