Carex laxiculmis 'Hobb'- Bunny Blue® Sedge is evergreen in the South and semi-evergreen in the North. Native to Eastern North America. Bunny Blue has blue-green to blue-gray foliage. Leaf blades are 1/2" wide, 12"-14" long and arching. Carex Bunny Blue® has clumping growth habit and spreads slowly to 12"-15" wide. Flowers yellow and insignificant in late Spring. Will grow in average soil. Requires moist to wet soil. Carex Blue Bunny® thrives in shade. Keep well-watered in part sun areas. Cut back foliage late Winter. Use for ground cover, mass planting, borders, edging, bog areas and as an accent plant in shade gardens, woodland gardens and around streams and pond banks. Mature height 12", spread 12"-15".
Carex laxiculmis 'Hobb' can be used as a lawn substitute or as an accent plant. Choose a location that receives partial to full shade. Bunny Blue sedge can tolerate full sun, but it will do best in shady areas.
Plant in well-drained soil. Bunny Blue sedge is tolerant of dry soil, but it will not do well in wet or soggy soil.
Space the plants 12-18 inches apart. Bunny Blue sedge will spread over time, so it is important to space the plants appropriately. Water regularly during the first year after planting. Once the plants are established, they are drought-tolerant and only need to be watered during dry periods.
Fertilize in spring with a balanced fertilizer. Bunny Blue sedge does not require a lot of fertilizer, but a light application in spring will help to promote new growth. Cut back the plants in late winter. This will help to keep them tidy and encourage new growth.
Bunny Blue sedge is a host plant for the zebra swallowtail butterfly, if interested in attracting butterflies to your garden. Carex laxiculmis 'Hobb' is deer-resistant and tolerant of salt.
Carex laxiculmis 'Hobb' is a slow-growing plant, so be patient. Not very tolerant of heat, so it may not do well in hot, dry climates. Overall, Carex laxiculmis 'Hobb' is a relatively easy plant to grow and care for.
Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
