Common Name: Green and Gold
Height: 4-6 Inches
Spread: 18-24 Inches
Hardiness Zone: 5-9
Sun Exposure: Full Sun to Shade, Afternoon shade in warmer climates
Special Requirements: Full sun needs ample water, shade reduces blooming

Green and Gold has attractive green, lance-shaped leaves, offering visual interest year-round. Versatile for groundcover, border edging, container planting, rock gardens, and wildflower meadows and tolerates limited foot traffic.
Chrysogonum virginianum 'Pierre' is a deciduous, low-growing, mat-forming plant similar to Ajuga, spreading through stolons. It features 3" long, ovate, fuzzy green leaves. Yellow, daisy-like flowers bloom from Spring through Early Summer, though shading reduces bloom density. Prefers average to moist, well-drained soil and requires plenty of water in full sun. Excellent for use as ground cover, borders, edging, woodland gardens, and naturalizing. Mature dimensions are 4"-6" in height and 18"-24" in spread.
Green and Gold adapts to varied soil conditions if kept moist and well-drained. It tolerates sun but needs partial or full shade in southern climates; it’s not drought-resistant.
An ideal native groundcover for woodland gardens, borders, and it can handle limited foot traffic. Chrysogonum virginianum 'Pierre', also called Green and Gold or Goldenstar, is a herbaceous perennial native to the eastern U.S., loved for its star-shaped, golden-yellow flowers that bloom profusely from Spring to Summer / Fall.
Additional Notes:
- Low maintenance and resistant to pests and diseases
- Deer-resistant
- Prefers moist, well-drained soil
- Propagates by division or stem cuttings
For a low-growing, easy-care perennial that brightens your garden with color, consider Chrysogonum virginianum 'Pierre'.
Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!

Robust healthy quality plants
Second year to order the Pierre Chrysogonum. Was so pleased with shipping and quality of plants, ordered again. This year the plants were again in wonderful condition. Last year, I wasn't able to plant right away but kept them watered and they had no issues. This time, the only thing was there was some shipping delay but all worked out. This seller really knows quality and I am appreciative of getting such healthy plants.

Woodland edge ground cover
I have a yard that is on the edge of a a hardwood forest in Chapel Hill, NC and was looking for something to replace the grass. This ground cover loves it in this location and in 2 years has filled the area that I hoped to cover. We have a lot of hungry deer and although it is the last thing they will nibble on, they will snack on it when they are hungry enough. I plan to buy more as I develop new shade gardens on my property.
