Product Description
Delphinium elatum 'Black Eyed Angels' (30)ct Flat
Common Name: Delphinium-Hybrid Bee; Series Name: New Millennium Hybrids.
Tall spires of frilly white flowers with black bees. Removing spent flower spikes will result in another round of blooms on secondary spikes in late summer and fall. However, its large, coarsely textured leaves make this plant attractive even when it is not in bloom.
Planted en masse, they make a magnificent display in early summer.
The English hybrid type of delphiniums are bred by New Zealand Delphiniums and are hand crossed to produce the highest quality seed. These F1 hybrids have excellent form, strong stems, and a vigorous growth habit. They were selected for their improved tolerance of heat and humidity, while retaining their cold hardiness.

Delphinium elatum 'Black Eyed Angels' is a stunning and elegant perennial known for its striking contrast between pure white petals and dark, almost black centers. Here is a closer look at its characteristics:
Appearance:
- Stately Spikes: 'Black Eyed Angels' produces tall, upright flower spikes densely packed with semi-double, pure white flowers.
- Dark Centers: The flowers have prominent, dark, almost black centers (bees) that create a dramatic contrast against the white petals. This is where the "Black Eyed Angels" name comes from.
- Tall and Upright: This Delphinium variety typically grows to about 3-5 feet tall, making it a striking presence in the garden.
Growing Conditions:
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. It flowers best in full sun, but some afternoon shade is beneficial in hot climates.
- Soil: Thrives in rich, well-drained soil.
- Hardiness Zones: Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 3-7.
Care:
- Staking: Due to its height, 'Black Eyed Angels' may require staking to support the tall flower spikes, especially in windy areas.
- Deadheading: Deadheading spent flower spikes encourages further blooms and prevents self-seeding.
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.
Uses:
- Back of Borders: Its height makes it ideal for the back of garden borders.
- Cottage Gardens: Fits well in cottage-style gardens, adding vertical interest and a touch of elegance.
- Cut Flowers: The tall flower spikes make excellent cut flowers.
Additional Information:
- Attracts Pollinators: Delphiniums attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to the garden.
- Deer Resistant: Deer tend to avoid Delphiniums.
- May Need Support: As mentioned earlier, staking is often necessary to prevent the tall flower spikes from flopping over.
If you are looking for a dramatic and elegant perennial with a striking color contrast, Delphinium elatum 'Black Eyed Angels' is an excellent choice. Its tall, white flower spikes with dark centers will add a touch of sophistication to your garden.

Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
