Euphorbia x martinii 'Ascot Rainbow' is a standout evergreen subshrub that brings a dazzling display of color to gardens throughout the year. It is prized for its variegated foliage, colorful bracts (modified leaves that resemble flowers), and ability to thrive in hot, dry conditions. Here is a closer look at what makes it special:
Appearance:
- Foliage: 'Ascot Rainbow' forms a mound of stunning rosettes with narrow, gray-green leaves edged in bright golden yellow. The foliage alone provides a vibrant show, but the color intensifies further in cooler months when the leaf tips become flushed with shades of red, pink, and orange.
- Bracts: In spring, clusters of variegated bracts in shades of cream, lime, and green emerge, adding another layer of interest. These bracts surround the true flowers, which are small and inconspicuous.
Growing Conditions:
- Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. For the most vibrant foliage color, provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Soil: Prefers well-drained soil and is exceptionally drought tolerant once established. It is not fussy about soil type but will perform best in sandy or loamy soil.
- Hardiness Zones: Hardy in USDA zones 6-9, making it suitable for a variety of climates.
Uses:
- Borders and Beds: Its compact size and vibrant foliage make it a fantastic addition to borders, beds, and rock gardens.
- Containers: 'Ascot Rainbow' also excels in containers, adding a splash of color to patios and decks.
- Winter Interest: Its colorful foliage provides much-needed winter interest, especially when many other plants have died back.
- Xeriscaping: Its drought tolerance makes it a valuable asset in xeriscapes or water-wise gardens.
Additional Benefits:
- Deer and Rabbit Resistant: The foliage is typically unappealing to deer and rabbits.
- Pest and Disease Resistant: It is generally resistant to most pests and diseases.
- Low Maintenance: It is a relatively low-maintenance plant that does not require much care once established.
Caution:
- Sap: Like other Euphorbias, 'Ascot Rainbow' has a milky sap that can be irritating to the skin and eyes. It is best to wear gloves when handling the plant.
- Toxicity: The sap is also toxic if ingested, so it is important to keep it away from children and pets.
Overall, Euphorbia x martinii 'Ascot Rainbow' is a wonderful choice for adding vibrant color and texture to gardens. Its unique foliage, colorful bracts, and adaptability make it a versatile and low-maintenance addition to any sunny space.
Ten (10) plants in quart containers per flat (or tray).
Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.

Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
