classic Hedera algeriensis, often simply called Algerian Ivy! It is a popular and versatile choice, and here is why:
Lush and Vibrant:
- Glossy Green Leaves: Algerian Ivy boasts large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves that are a rich, deep green color. This creates a lush and vibrant look that adds a touch of the tropics to any setting.
Versatile Growth:
- Ground Cover Champion: It excels as a ground cover, quickly spreading to form a dense carpet of foliage. This makes it perfect for covering slopes, filling in bare spots, or creating a low-maintenance ground cover.
- Climbing Powerhouse: It is also a vigorous climber, readily attaching itself to walls, fences, or trellises. It can create a dramatic vertical element in your garden.
- Container Delight: Algerian Ivy thrives in containers, where its cascading foliage adds beauty to hanging baskets, window boxes, or pots.
Growing Conditions:
- Shade Tolerant: It prefers partial to full shade, making it a great choice for areas where sunlight is limited.
- Adaptable Soil: It can grow in a variety of soil types, as long as they are well-drained.
- Hardy: It is generally hardy in USDA zones 7-11, so it can handle a wide range of temperatures.
Additional Benefits:
- Evergreen: It retains its leaves year-round, providing constant color and interest to your garden.
- Low Maintenance: Once established, it is relatively easy to care for.
Things to Consider:
- Potential for Invasiveness: Like many ivies, Algerian Ivy can become invasive if not kept in check. Regular pruning is important to prevent it from spreading beyond its intended boundaries.
- Toxicity: The leaves and berries are toxic if ingested, so it is important to keep it away from children and pets.
Overall: Hedera algeriensis (Algerian Ivy) is a fantastic and reliable choice for adding a touch of classic charm to your garden. Its lush foliage, combined with its versatility and easy care, makes it a popular option for gardeners of all skill levels.

Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
