Growing Conditions Hemerocallis 'Orange Smoothie' daylilies are relatively easy to grow and can tolerate a variety of conditions. They can survive many harsh conditions that other plants cannot, including polluted city environments, slopes, poor and dry soils, near pavement that is salted in winter, and under Black Walnut trees (not affected by juglone). Here are some ideal growing conditions:
- Sunlight: They thrive in full sun to part sun. For optimum flowering performance, plant in full sun.
- Soil: They can grow in a wide range of soils, from normal to slightly wet to dry. Fertile loam is preferred.
- Water: While they are drought tolerant, thorough watering is required to ensure the foliage remains attractive, especially during hot, humid weather.
Planting and Care
- Planting Time: The best time to plant daylilies is in early fall or early spring.
- Spacing: Space plants 18-24 inches apart.
- Propagation: This plant can be propagated by division.
- Maintenance: Daylilies are low-maintenance plants. After flowering, remove spent blooms and seedpods to improve appearance and encourage rebloom. When all the flowers on a scape are finished, cut off the scape close to ground level. Remove dead foliage in the fall.
- Overwintering: Trim plants back to 2 inches late in the season. If done too early, regrowth will occur. Cover with protective frost cloth if placed outside in a cold frame. Provide ventilation whenever temperatures rise above 40° F.
Pests and Diseases While generally pest-free, 'Orange Smoothie' may occasionally be affected by common garden pests such as aphids, spider mites, and thrips. In terms of diseases, crown rot, fusarium, rhizoctonia, leaf spot, and leaf streak can sometimes occur. Daylily rust (Puccinia hemerocallidis) can be a problem in warmer climates, but it does not overwinter in colder zones.
Uses in the Garden Daylilies are versatile plants that can be used in a variety of ways in the garden. Here are some ideas for using 'Orange Smoothie':
- Borders: They make excellent border plants.
- Containers: They can be grown in containers near the patio.
- Ground Covers: They can be used as ground covers on slopes.
- Mass Plantings: Plant them en masse for a stunning display of color.
- Focal Point: Their vibrant color and form make them a great focal point in the garden.
Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
