Hosta 'Above the Clouds' is a truly stunning hosta that lives up to its name! It is a newer variety that is quickly becoming a favorite among hosta enthusiasts. Here is why:
Hosta 'Above the Clouds'
- Unique Foliage: The leaves are a beautiful, cloudy blue color with a distinct, upward cupped shape. They are also heavily puckered, which adds a lot of texture and interest. This combination of color, shape, and texture makes 'Above the Clouds' a real standout in the shade garden. The leaves emerge a soft, almost misty blue in spring, gradually deepening in color as the season progresses. The heavy puckering creates a three-dimensional effect, making the leaves look like they are holding raindrops or catching the light in a mesmerizing way. The upward cupping adds to this effect, giving the plant a sense of dynamism and movement.
- Large Size: This is a substantial hosta, growing to about 25 inches tall and spreading up to 60 inches wide. It makes a bold statement in the landscape and is perfect for filling large spaces. Its impressive size makes it a natural focal point in the garden, drawing the eye and creating a sense of drama. It is ideal for creating a lush, tropical feel in shady areas, or for adding a touch of grandeur to woodland gardens.
- Attractive Flowers: In mid-summer, 'Above the Clouds' produces tall flower scapes with pale lavender blooms. While the flowers are not the main attraction, they add a touch of color and attract hummingbirds to the garden. The flowers rise above the foliage on sturdy stems, creating a beautiful contrast against the blue leaves. They are a welcome sight in the summer garden, providing a source of nectar for pollinators and adding a touch of fragrance to the air.

Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
