Common name: Japanese Rooftop iris
Zone 5 to 9.
Filtered sun.
Showy crested flowers, with a yellow throat, blooms in midsummer atop 10 to 14 inch stems. Broad, lance-shaped, flat leaves grow vigorously and quickly form dense clumps.
Preferred location is organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Plant the fat rhizomes only about 1 to 2 inches below the soil. Rhizomes tend to push out of the ground and will benefit from fall and spring mulches. Leaf mold mulch will add beneficial nutrients.
Use in woodland margins, sunny banks, meadows, damp places, and anywhere near water.
