Product Description
Lavandula angustifolia SWEET ROMANCE® ('Kerlavangem' PP23001 CPBR4906) (20)ct Flat
Common Name: English Lavender
Gardeners around the world have been growing lavender for centuries for its intensely fragrant flowers, beautiful appearance, and ease of culture. Along comes SWEET ROMANCE®, destined to become a favorite of growers and retailers because of its ability to bloom the first year with little or no vernalization. Additionally, it begins to flower a bit earlier in the season, typically in early summer and lasting into early fall.
The grey-green foliage forms a compact mound topped with plump, rich violet purple flower wands that are perfect for cutting for fresh and dried bouquets. Clusters of tiny flowers appear at the nodes up the stem in addition to the terminal inflorescence, adding color down into the plant.
Lavender must be grown in full sun to be able to produce flowers, so do not hesitate to plant them in those hot, dry areas where nothing else seems to grow. They will actually grow better in poor, gravelly soil than in rich humus; don't be tempted to enrich the soil when you plant it. Sharp drainage, especially in winter, is essential for preventing crown rot. Other than that, Lavender is known to have few problems with pests and diseases. Shearing back the evergreen foliage in early spring will rejuvenate plants and stimulate new growth.

Bred in the heart of England, Lavandula angustifolia SWEET ROMANCE™ ('Kerlavangem' PP23001) has quickly become a favorite among gardening enthusiasts for its captivating beauty and versatility. This exceptional cultivar of English lavender boasts a delightful fragrance and vibrant blooms, making it a perfect addition to any garden.
Characteristics SWEET ROMANCE™ is a semi-woody perennial that forms a compact mound, typically reaching a height and spread of 1 to 1.5 feet. It thrives in USDA hardiness zones 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. The plant features narrow, gray-green leaves that release a soothing aroma, even when not in bloom. One of the most striking features of this cultivar is its ability to bloom earlier than other lavenders, starting in early summer and continuing through early fall. The plump, violet-purple flower wands rise above the foliage, creating a stunning visual display. Adding to its charm, clusters of tiny flowers appear along the stems, enhancing the overall beauty of the plant. The flowers are not only beautiful but also intensely fragrant, making them ideal for fresh or dried bouquets. Notably, Sweet Romance™ has strong stems that are well-suited for drying, making it a perfect choice for crafts and dried flower arrangements.
Images The beauty of SWEET ROMANCE™ lavender is evident in its vibrant violet-purple flowers and contrasting gray-green foliage. The compact, mounding growth habit adds to its visual appeal, making it a versatile choice for various garden settings.
Care Requirements SWEET ROMANCE™ thrives in sunny locations and well-drained soil. While it's relatively low-maintenance, providing the right growing conditions will ensure it flourishes in your garden.
- Sunlight: Plant SWEET ROMANCE™ in a spot that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Ample sunlight is crucial for robust growth and abundant blooms.
- Soil: Well-drained, alkaline soil is essential for this lavender cultivar. It prefers a light, sandy soil with slightly lower fertility. Avoid heavy clay soils, as they tend to retain excess moisture, which can lead to root rot, especially during the winter months.
- Moisture: While SWEET ROMANCE™ is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering is important, especially during hot, dry periods. However, be careful not to overwater, as this can also lead to root rot.
- Fertilizing: This cultivar is a light feeder and thrives under a constant liquid fertilizer program at a rate of 50-75 ppm. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can result in excessive foliage growth at the expense of flower production.
- Pruning: To encourage continuous blooming and maintain the plant's shape, prune immediately after flowering. This involves removing the spent flower spikes. You can also prune lightly in early spring to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged branches. To rejuvenate the plant and stimulate new growth, shear back the evergreen foliage in early spring.
Important Note: English lavender, including SWEET ROMANCE™, can be challenging to grow in regions with high summer humidity. To mitigate this, ensure proper air circulation and consider using rock mulch instead of organic mulch, which can trap moisture.
Growth Habits SWEET ROMANCE™ is a compact variety of English lavender with a mounding growth habit. It is known for its relatively fast growth, blooming profusely in its first year. This is a unique characteristic, as most lavender varieties require a period of cold temperatures (vernalization) to initiate flowering. While SWEET ROMANCE™ benefits from cold exposure, it can flower with little or no vernalization, making it an excellent choice for gardeners who want quick results.
Companion Plants To create a visually stunning and thriving garden, consider pairing SWEET ROMANCE™ with other drought-tolerant perennials that enjoy full sun. Here are a few companion plant suggestions:
- Yarrow (Achillea): With its vibrant flower clusters in a variety of colors, yarrow provides a beautiful contrast to the lavender's purple hues.
- Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia): The cheerful, daisy-like flowers of black-eyed Susan add a touch of wildflower charm and a contrasting texture to the lavender's fine foliage.
- Coneflower (Echinacea): These pollinator magnets not only add visual interest with their prominent cone-shaped centers but also support a healthy garden ecosystem.
- Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia): For a dramatic statement, combine the cool tones of lavender with the fiery hues of red hot poker's tall flower spikes.
- Catmint (Nepeta): With its similar appearance and tolerance to similar growing conditions, catmint complements lavender beautifully while offering greater cold hardiness.
- Roses (Rosa): The classic combination of roses and lavender creates a romantic and fragrant garden with a timeless appeal.

This cultivar is particularly appealing due to its ability to bloom in its first year, even with minimal cold exposure. Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
