Waves of massive, inky blackberry flowers with large bract. It perfumes the air with its outstanding fragrance, according to the industry publication Greenhouse Grower.
Lavandula stoechas 'La Diva Big Night' is a stunning variety of Spanish lavender that truly lives up to its name! It is a relatively new cultivar that offers some exciting improvements over traditional Spanish lavenders.
- Unique Parentage: It is the first-ever cross between Spanish and English lavender, inheriting the best traits of both. This gives it the hardiness and robust foliage of English lavender, along with the heat and humidity tolerance of Spanish lavender.
- Abundant Blooms: Expect waves of large, fragrant, deep inky blue-purple flowers with violet-colored "ears" (the characteristic bracts atop the flower spikes) from late spring through summer.
- Compact Habit: Reaching about 14 inches tall and 18 inches wide, it is perfect for smaller gardens, borders, and containers.
- Fragrance: Both the flowers and the gray-green foliage are highly aromatic, releasing a classic lavender scent.
- Hardiness: It is hardy to zone 6 (-10°F), which is a significant improvement for Spanish lavenders.
- Low Maintenance: Deer and rabbits tend to avoid it, and it shows good resistance to pests and diseases.
- Versatile Uses: Ideal for borders, rock gardens, containers, and as cut flowers (fresh or dried).
Growing Tips:
- Sunlight: Plant in full sun (at least 6 hours per day).
- Soil: Well-drained soil is crucial. Amend heavy clay soil with compost or other organic matter.
- Watering: Water regularly, especially when first planted, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Pruning: Light pruning after flowering encourages bushier growth and more blooms.
Why 'La Diva Big Night' stands out:
- Improved Hardiness: Can withstand colder temperatures than most Spanish lavenders.
- Stronger Growth: The English lavender parentage gives it a more robust and durable form.
- Long Bloom Period: Enjoy continuous blooms throughout the growing season.
- Intense Fragrance: The aroma is potent and delightful.

Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
