Liriope grass, also called lilyturf, border grass, or monkey grass, looks a lot like a grass, but actually is a member of the asparagus family, Asparagaceae,
Liriope tolerates a wide range of soils and soil conditions, though it doesn't like constantly wet or boggy soil.
During the first growing season, water the plants regularly, at least 1 inch of water per week. Once established, liriope plants are relatively drought-tolerant.
Liriope can be mow during the late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
Use liriope as a groundcover, an edging plant to mark pathways or borders, naturalize under large trees, and in mass plantings for erosion control. A dense mat of liriope can stabilize soil on slopes and ditch banks. Liriope is a low-maintenance plant that is drought and deer-resistant.
Liriope muscari 'Variegata' is a beautiful and versatile evergreen groundcover that adds a touch of elegance to any landscape. Here is a breakdown of its key features:
Appearance and Characteristics:
- Variegated Foliage: The most striking feature of 'Variegata' is its leaves. They are dark green with creamy white or yellow margins, creating a beautiful two-toned effect. This variegation adds visual interest and brightens up shady areas.
- Clumping Growth Habit: Unlike Liriope spicata, which spreads aggressively by rhizomes, Liriope muscari 'Variegata' has a clumping growth habit. It forms neat, compact mounds that gradually expand over time.
- Flowers: In late summer, 'Variegata' produces upright spikes of lavender or purple flowers that rise above the foliage. The flowers are followed by the development of black berries in the fall, adding further interest.
Growing Conditions:
- Sunlight: Liriope muscari 'Variegata' thrives in partial shade to full shade. It can tolerate some sun, but the variegation may fade in full sun.
- Soil: It prefers well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. However, it can adapt to various soil types, including clay and sandy soils.
- Watering: Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant, but it appreciates regular watering during dry periods, especially in the first year.
Uses in Landscaping:
- Groundcover: 'Variegata' is an excellent choice for creating a colorful and low-maintenance groundcover in shady areas.
- Edging: It can be used to create a neat and attractive border along pathways, flower beds, or around trees.
- Container Gardening: It works well in containers, adding a touch of texture and color to patios and balconies.
- Accent Plant: It can be used as an accent plant in small groups or as a filler in mixed plantings.
Benefits:
- Attractive Foliage: The variegated leaves provide year-round interest and brighten up shady areas.
- Clumping Habit: Its clumping growth habit makes it less invasive than Liriope spicata.
- Low Maintenance: Once established, it requires minimal care.
- Deer Resistant: Deer tend to avoid eating Liriope.
Potential Drawbacks:
- Slower Spread: Compared to Liriope spicata, 'Variegata' spreads more slowly.
- Variegation May Fade: In full sun, the variegation may become less pronounced.
Additional Tips:
- Planting: The best time to plant Liriope muscari 'Variegata' is in the spring or fall.
- Spacing: Space plants about 12-18 inches apart, depending on how quickly you want the area to fill in.
- Maintenance: Trim back any dead or damaged foliage in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth.
Overall, Liriope muscari 'Variegata' is a beautiful and reliable groundcover that adds a touch of elegance to any garden. Its variegated foliage, clumping habit, and low-maintenance requirements make it a popular choice for gardeners of all skill levels.
Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!

perfect
Plants arrived on time, well-watered, packed tightly. When I planted them, I realized how very healthy they are, with really substantial roots on each one. Cant wait to see how they fill in.
