Mentha requienii, commonly known as Corsican mint, is a delightful little herb that brings a burst of minty freshness to any garden. This miniature creeping mint is native to Corsica, Sardinia, and Montecristo Island, and it's prized for its tiny leaves, strong aroma, and ability to thrive in spaces where other plants might struggle.
- Size: Extremely low-growing, reaching only 1/2 to 1 inch in height. Spreads horizontally to form a dense mat.
- Leaves: Tiny, round, bright green leaves with a strong minty fragrance when crushed.
- Flowers: Small, lilac-colored flowers bloom in summer, but they are often inconspicuous.
- Hardiness Zones: 6 to 9 (can be grown as an annual in colder climates)
- Light: Full sun to part shade (prefers some shade in hot climates)
- Soil: Moist but well-drained soil. Tolerates a wide range of soil types.
- Uses: Groundcover, between stepping stones, in rock gardens, containers, or as a culinary herb.
Benefits:
- Aromatic Groundcover: Creates a fragrant carpet that releases a refreshing minty scent when stepped on.
- Ideal for Small Spaces: Perfect for tucking into nooks and crannies, between pavers, or in rock gardens.
- Culinary Uses: The leaves can be used to flavor dishes, teas, or cocktails.
- Easy to Grow: Relatively low-maintenance and adaptable to various conditions.
Growing Tips:
- Planting: Space plants 6-10 inches apart.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hot weather.
- Fertilizing: Not generally required, but a light application of fertilizer in spring can promote growth.
- Overwintering: In colder climates, protect plants with a layer of mulch or grow them in containers that can be brought indoors.
Things to Note:
- Invasive Potential: While generally not considered invasive, Corsican mint can spread readily in ideal conditions. It's best to plant it in areas where it can be contained or monitored.
- Foot Traffic: Tolerates light foot traffic, but it's best to avoid heavy trampling.
If you're looking for a unique and versatile groundcover with a refreshing minty scent, Mentha requienii is an excellent choice. Its diminutive size and adaptability make it a welcome addition to any garden, patio, or balcony.
Excellent as a border plant, container, edging, ground cover, mass plantings, and between stepping stones.
Ten (10) plants in 4.5-inch containers per flat (or tray).
Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!

BEAUTIFUL lilliputian mint!
First experience with Corsican Mint, and I could not be happier with the plants I received! They are in great shape: bright, vibrant, healthy, fragrant, and just starting to spill over the sides of their containers. Once shipped, they arrived on my doorstep in less than 24 hours, very carefully packaged. I followed the package instructions and let the plants acclimate in a shaded area, and on the third day I carefully transplanted them. I planted all 10 in different spots to experiment with best growth environment (since I am new to this plant), and expect to lose a few (I read online that they are finicky). I planted 3 in separately located containers to (hopefully) grow strong keeper plants to propagate more from in the future. It hasn't been long since I transplanted them, but so far they are doing great! I highly recommend this product as well as Bloomin Designs Nursery. I will definitely be a repeat customer!
