Origanum 'Drops of Jupiter' is a delightful ornamental oregano that adds a splash of vibrant color and texture to the garden. It is not your typical culinary oregano; this one is primarily grown for its stunning foliage and long-lasting blooms. Here is a closer look at what makes it so special:
Origanum 'Drops of Jupiter'
- Bright Chartreuse Foliage: The leaves are a striking chartreuse yellow, creating a vibrant backdrop in the garden. This bright color contrasts beautifully with the pink flowers and adds a touch of sunshine to any space. The foliage is also fragrant, adding another layer of sensory appeal.
- Unique Flowers: 'Drops of Jupiter' produces small pink flowers that are surrounded by dark purple sepals. These sepals persist long after the flowers fade, extending the color display well into fall. The combination of pink and purple is quite eye-catching and adds a touch of whimsy to the plant.
- Long Blooming Period: This oregano blooms from mid-summer to early fall, providing a long-lasting show of color. This extended bloom time is a major plus, as it ensures that your garden will be filled with vibrant color for many months.
- Compact and Mounding: 'Drops of Jupiter' has a compact and mounding growth habit, typically reaching about 2 feet tall and spreading up to 3 feet wide. This makes it a versatile choice for various garden settings, including borders, containers, and rock gardens. Its manageable size makes it a good fit for even smaller gardens.
- Drought Tolerant: Once established, this oregano is quite drought tolerant, making it a great choice for gardeners in drier climates or those who want a low-maintenance plant. This drought tolerance also makes it a good choice for container gardening, as it will not require constant watering.
Growing Tips:
- Light: Prefers full sun to ensure the best foliage color and blooming.
- Soil: Thrives in well-drained soil. It can tolerate poor soil conditions, but it is essential to avoid waterlogged soil.
- Watering: Water regularly until established, then reduce watering frequency. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
- Maintenance: Little maintenance is needed. You can shear the plants back lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage new growth.
Additional Information:
- Hardy: Generally hardy in zones 4-9.
- Attracts Pollinators: The flowers attract bees and butterflies to the garden.
- Deer Resistant: Deer tend to avoid this plant due to its fragrant foliage.
- Versatile: 'Drops of Jupiter' can be used in various garden settings, including borders, containers, rock gardens, and herb gardens.

Its unique foliage, long-lasting blooms, and drought tolerance make it a great choice for any gardener. Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
