Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Lemon Squeeze' is a vibrant and eye-catching ornamental grass that adds a burst of sunshine to gardens with its bright golden foliage and fluffy flower plumes. It is a fantastic choice for adding texture, movement, and a touch of whimsy to any sunny landscape. Here is what you need to know about this cheerful cultivar:
- Golden Foliage: 'Lemon Squeeze' is admired for its bright, chartreuse-gold foliage that forms a dense, upright clump. The vibrant color adds a cheerful touch to the garden and contrasts beautifully with other plants.
- Fluffy Flower Plumes: In mid-summer, attractive copper-colored flower plumes emerge, adding another layer of texture and interest. These plumes persist into fall and winter, providing visual appeal even after the growing season ends.
- Compact Habit: This cultivar typically grows 3-3.5 feet tall and 4-4.5 feet wide, forming a neat, mounded habit. It is a good choice for smaller gardens and borders without being overwhelming.
- Movement and Texture: The fine-textured foliage sways gracefully in the breeze, adding movement and a sense of tranquility to the garden.
- Adaptable and Hardy: 'Lemon Squeeze' is adaptable to various soil types and thrives in full sun. It is also drought-tolerant once established and hardy in USDA zones 5-9.
- Low Maintenance: This ornamental grass is relatively low-maintenance and does not require deadheading or frequent watering.
- Wildlife-Friendly: The flowers attract birds and other wildlife, and the dense foliage provides shelter for small creatures.
Growing Tips:
- Sunlight: Plant in full sun (at least 6 hours per day) for the best foliage color and flowering.
- Soil: Prefers well-drained soil but tolerates a variety of soil types.
- Water: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it is fairly drought-tolerant.
- Hardiness: 'Lemon Squeeze' is hardy in USDA zones 5-9, tolerating cold winters and hot summers.
- Maintenance: Cut back the foliage to about 4-6 inches tall in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. This will tidy up the plant and encourage fresh growth.
Design Ideas:
- Borders: Plant in groups or drifts to create a bold splash of color and texture in borders and flower beds.
- Containers: Its manageable size makes it suitable for container gardening, adding a vertical accent to patios and decks.
- Meadow Gardens: Combine with other native wildflowers and grasses for a naturalized look.
- Mass Plantings: Create a dramatic effect by planting 'Lemon Squeeze' en masse.
- Erosion Control: Its dense root system makes it a good choice for stabilizing slopes and preventing erosion.

Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
