Product Description
Potentilla neumanniana 'Nana'
Common name: cinquefoil, Alpine Cinquefoil;
a/k/a P. verna, P. tabernaemontani or P. crantzii.
Zones (3) 4 to 8 (9).
Full sun to part shade.
Plants reach 3 to 4 inches tall and 12+ inches wide,
Herbaceous, semi-evergreen, mat-forming perennial ground cover.
Spicy-scented, strawberry-like leaves are shiny and deep green. Buttery yellow, one-quarter inch, 5-petaled, long-blooming flowers emerge in spring and sometimes rebloom early autumn.
Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil, Potentilla neumanniana 'Nana' prefers moist, cool soils in full sun. Spreading rapidly by runners to form a dense ground cover and requiring little maintenance, it can be mowed occasionally on a high setting to trim up the plants. Great for dry trouble spots where nothing else will grow, it is easily divided in spring or early fall by dividing clump into smaller sections.
Excellent in large and small mass plantings or rock gardens. Deer resistant and drought tolerant, 'Nana' can be used in lieu of lawn in areas where there is little or no foot traffic.
Potentilla neumanniana 'Nana' is a charming, low-growing groundcover that brightens gardens with its cheerful yellow flowers and attractive foliage. Here is a closer look at this versatile plant:
- Dwarf and Spreading: 'Nana' is a dwarf cultivar, typically growing only 2-3 inches tall, but it spreads horizontally to form a dense mat that can reach 12 inches or more in width. This makes it an excellent choice for groundcover, rock gardens, and border fronts.
- Sunny Yellow Flowers: In spring, the plant is covered in a profusion of small, bright yellow, five-petaled flowers that resemble miniature buttercups. These cheerful blooms add a sunny touch to the landscape and attract pollinators.
- Strawberry-like Foliage: The leaves are palmate, deep green, and slightly hairy, resembling small strawberry leaves. They add texture and interest to the garden even when the plant is not in bloom.
- Easy Care: 'Nana' is known for its low-maintenance nature and adaptability, making it a great choice for gardeners of all levels.
- Tolerates Foot Traffic: While not as tough as some groundcovers, 'Nana' can handle light foot traffic, making it suitable for pathways and areas where people may occasionally walk.
Growing Tips:
- Sunlight: Plant in full sun to partial shade. It prefers at least 6 hours of sunlight per day for optimal flowering.
- Soil: Prefers well-drained soil but is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy and loamy soils.
- Water: Water regularly, especially during hot, dry periods, but avoid overwatering. Once established, it has good drought tolerance.
- Hardiness: 'Nana' is hardy in USDA zones 4-8, tolerating a wide range of temperatures.
- Maintenance: This groundcover requires minimal maintenance. You can trim it back lightly if it starts to spread beyond its desired area.
Design Ideas:
- Rock Gardens: The bright yellow flowers and low-growing habit make it a perfect fit for rock gardens, where it can spill over rocks and crevices.
- Groundcover: Use it as a groundcover to suppress weeds and add color to sunny areas.
- Border Fronts: Its dwarf size makes it ideal for edging flower beds and borders.
- Between Stepping Stones: 'Nana' softens the look of hardscaping and adds a touch of charm to pathways.
- Containers: It can also be grown in containers and hanging baskets, where its trailing foliage can cascade over the edges.
Ten (10) plants in 4.5-inch containers per flat (or tray).
Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.
See our Container Sizes and Bare Root Perennials pages for more information.
Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!

Shipping confusion
I am happy with the plants. There was confusion with the shipping. I was told they do not ship to P.O. Boxes, so I gave them a residential address. They shipped to the P.O. anyway, causing a "delivery exception" with Fed Ex, an extra day with plants in the box, and some frustration on my end..
