Pulmonaria 'Spot On' is a delightful addition to shade gardens, offering a unique color combination and attractive foliage. Here is a breakdown of its key features and how to grow it successfully:
- Unique Flower Color: 'Spot On' is admired for its unusual flower color progression. The buds emerge a near-orange shade, opening to a deep salmon pink, and then maturing to a rich blue. This captivating transformation adds a dynamic element to the garden.
- Silver-Spotted Foliage: The dark green leaves are speckled with silver, providing an attractive backdrop for the colorful blooms, and adding visual interest even after the flowering period ends.
- Early Bloomer: 'Spot On' is one of the earliest Pulmonaria varieties to bloom, typically flowering in late spring, signaling the end of winter and the arrival of warmer days.
- Compact Habit: This cultivar maintains a neat and compact form, growing about 14-16 inches tall and 18-20 inches wide, making it suitable for smaller gardens and borders.
- Shade-Loving: Thrives in partial to full shade, making it a valuable asset for brightening up those darker corners of the garden.
- Attracts Pollinators: The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds, adding life and movement to the garden.
- Deer and Rabbit Resistant: A great choice for gardens where these animals are a concern.
Growing Tips:
- Light: Plant in partial to full shade. It can tolerate some morning sun but prefers protection from the harsh afternoon sun.
- Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Amend heavy clay soil with compost or other organic matter to improve drainage.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hot, dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
- Hardiness: 'Spot On' is hardy in USDA zones 3-8, tolerating a wide range of temperatures.
- Maintenance: Remove any old or damaged foliage in spring to tidy up the plant and promote new growth. If the plant shows signs of decline or powdery mildew, you can cut it back to the ground level to encourage a fresh flush of growth.
Design Ideas:
- Woodland Gardens: 'Spot On' is a natural fit for woodland gardens, where it can be combined with other shade-loving plants like hostas, ferns, and bleeding hearts.
- Borders: Use it as an edging plant or in the front to middle of borders to add early-season color.
- Containers: Its compact size makes it suitable for container gardening, adding a touch of spring color to patios and decks.
- Mass Plantings: Create a dramatic effect by planting 'Spot On' in groups or drifts.

Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.

Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
