Tiarella 'Cutting Edge' is a captivating new variety of foamflower that has quickly become a favorite among gardening enthusiasts. This stunning perennial, a hybrid of Tiarella cordifolia and Tiarella wherryi, was bred by Hans Hansen and represents the latest advancements in foamflower breeding. Replacing 'Jade Peacock' in the Proven Winners® Program, 'Cutting Edge' stands out with its exceptional beauty and vigor. This article delves into the characteristics of Tiarella 'Cutting Edge', provides comprehensive guidance on its cultivation, and explores some of its ideal companion plants. To gather this information, various sources were consulted, including plant nurseries, gardening websites, social media groups, and image searches.
Characteristics of Tiarella 'Cutting Edge' Tiarella 'Cutting Edge' typically reaches a height of 8-10 inches and spreads to about 16-18 inches wide, forming a neat, mounding clump. Its most striking feature is its foliage: deeply incised, snowflake-shaped green leaves adorned with a dramatic dark burgundy center that extends along the veins. In early spring, delicate, creamy-white bottlebrush-like flowers emerge, blanketing the plant in a frothy display. These lightly fragrant blooms also make excellent cut flowers. As a native North American plant, 'Cutting Edge' thrives in USDA hardiness zones 4-9. It is well-suited for a variety of garden settings, including rock gardens, and exhibits a tolerance for dry shade.
Growing Tiarella 'Cutting Edge' Cultivating Tiarella 'Cutting Edge' is a rewarding experience, as it is a relatively low-maintenance plant that can thrive with minimal intervention. It prefers partial to full shade and can be grown in both containers and garden beds. Providing it with humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil is crucial for its optimal growth. While consistent moisture is essential, it is important to avoid overwatering, as soggy conditions can be detrimental. This resilient perennial can remain undivided for years without losing its vigor. In the right conditions, it retains its attractive foliage throughout the winter, shedding it only as new growth emerges in spring. While generally low-maintenance, 'Cutting Edge' can benefit from occasional rejuvenation. If the foliage becomes tattered due to harsh weather, it can be cut back to encourage fresh growth. To maintain its tidy appearance, it is also recommended to shear old foliage before new growth appears in the spring.
Fertilizing Tiarella 'Cutting Edge' Tiarella 'Cutting Edge' is not a heavy feeder and thrives in organically rich soil. When planting, amending the soil with compost provides essential nutrients. In fertile soil, it may not require any supplemental fertilizer for years. However, if the soil is poor, a spring application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer can be beneficial. For container-grown plants, monthly fertilization with a balanced liquid fertilizer is recommended, as frequent watering can deplete nutrients from the potting mix.
Pests and Diseases Tiarella 'Cutting Edge' is generally resistant to pests and diseases when grown in appropriate conditions. However, potential pests include black vine weevils, mealybugs, root weevils, slugs, and snails. Possible diseases include root rot, rust, and powdery mildew.

Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.

Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
