Verbascum (ver-bask-um) Mullein; Scrophulariaceae Family. A hardy genus, native to Europe and Asia, but naturalized in the US. Tall, erect habit with straight, rigid dense spikes of white, yellow, orange red or purple bloom. Many species have felty, gray-green foliage and stems. Verbascum is handsome and imposing in the large border and in the wild garden. The straight spikes of dried seed pods and the small basal rosettes of thick gray leaves of young plants are effective in dried arrangements. Plant Verbascum in ordinary garden soil, with good drainage and in full sun.
