Vinca major, a member of the Apocynaceae family, is a hardy, low-maintenance, trailing vine perennial plant that is native to Europe and Asia.
Embrace the lush beauty and versatility of Vinca major! Also known as Bigleaf Periwinkle or Greater Periwinkle, this vigorous, evergreen groundcover is a garden workhorse, offering attractive foliage, charming blooms, and effortless elegance.
- Lush Foliage: Vinca major features glossy, dark green leaves that create a dense, carpet-like groundcover. The leaves are larger than those of its relative, Vinca minor, adding a bold texture to shady areas. This evergreen foliage provides year-round beauty, especially in warmer climates.
- Charming Blooms: In spring, delicate, lavender-blue flowers emerge, adding a touch of whimsy to the lush foliage. These pinwheel-shaped blooms, reaching about 2 inches in diameter, create a lovely contrast against the dark green leaves. While the main flush of flowers occurs in spring, you can expect sporadic blooms throughout the growing season.
- Vigorous Groundcover: This Vinca is a vigorous grower, quickly forming a dense, weed-suppressing mat that requires minimal maintenance. It is perfect for filling in gaps, stabilizing slopes, or creating a lush carpet under trees and shrubs where grass struggles to grow.
- Shade-Loving and Adaptable: Vinca major thrives in shade to partial shade, making it an ideal choice for areas with limited sunlight. It is also adaptable to various soil types and moisture levels, making it a reliable choice for a wide range of garden conditions.
- Versatile Applications: This versatile groundcover is a valuable addition to any shade garden. Use it to brighten borders, add a touch of elegance to containers, spill over walls, create a lush carpet under trees and shrubs, or even as a trailing accent in hanging baskets.

Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.

Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
